GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG, 10th. October, 1912.

In continuation of my Confidential Despatch

of the 4th. of October, I have the honour to transmit a copy of a

letter from the Unofficial Members of the Executive and Legisla-

-tive Councils on the subject of the establishment of a Wireles$

Telegraphic Station at Hongkong.

The Unofficial Members are afraid that the

installation of a Medium or Low Power Station for communication with ships may prejudice the prospect of the early inclusion of Hongkong in the Imperial Scheme. I have expressed to them the opinion that the two questions are separate and that their fears are unfounded, but I should like an authoritative statement from

you on the subject.

The cheapening of cable rates would be of immense value to a great emporium of trade like Hongkong and I feel sure that the taxpayers of mis Colony would willingly make sacrifices, if necessary, in order to have this Port included in the original scheme of an Imperial Chain of Wireless Stations.
